I loved doing this portrait of Chichio, a student of Psychology in Florence where I was painting at the time. I was full of wonder as he was extraordinarily adept at striking the exact same pose each and every time he sat for me. I had a little story in my head that he was of aristocratic descent and I think you can imagine this in the portrait. His eyes were set wide and I confide that I felt under considerable and penetrating scrutiny myself. However, he could have been thinking about what to have for supper most of the time. He was a perfect model.
